What is an HVAC System?

HVAC stands for Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning. An HVAC system is a complete home comfort system that can heat and cool your home, as well as provide improved indoor air quality and humidity control. The main components of an HVAC system work together to regulate temperature, circulate air, and maintain comfort in a building.
How an HVAC System Works
- The thermostat senses the indoor temperature and signals the system to start.
- For cooling:
- Warm indoor air is drawn over the cold evaporator coils.
- Heat is absorbed by refrigerant in the coils.
- The cooled air is then distributed throughout the home.
- The absorbed heat is transferred outside via the condenser unit.
3. For heating:
- The furnace ignites to heat air.
- A blower fan pushes the heated air through ducts into rooms.
4. The air handler and ductwork distribute the conditioned air throughout the building.
5. Return ducts bring air back to be reconditioned and the cycle repeats.
Types of HVAC Systems
There are several types of HVAC systems, including:
- Split systems (separate indoor and outdoor units)
- Packaged systems (all components in one unit)
- Ductless mini-split systems
- Central systems
- Zoned systems
